A recent trip to the UK lead me to making quite a few searches online for shoes I'd seen in the stores over there. Anyway, fast forward to a few months ago, and back in the States I bought a pair of twelve dollar sneakers from Forever 21 at the mall. They are gray with dark pin-stripes. They are mostly fabric and they look similar to a pair of shoes from the brand 'Tom's'. The reason why I love them so much is not because they are fancy and clean, just like the shoes I'd bought from the UK stores. I love them because they are the exact opposite of that and they tell a story of my summer. About a week after purchasing these shoes, I took them with me on a spontaneous camping adventure with a few friends and I. Sitting around the camp fire, I had not noticed my feet getting intensely warm until it was too late and they had been slightly charred from the fire. The dirt was also a contributing factor in the new state of my sneaks. I had been careless, and I told myself to wash them once I got home. About a week after that incident, I still had not washed my shoes. I instead, drew an inverted cross with a black sharpie on the front of each shoe. I realized that there was no turning back from that point. Cheap shoes are cheap shoes for a reason. They had character, is what I thought. As months passed, some fabric tore and frayed and stained. Now my shoes look nothing like they had when I purchased them. They now represent me, and my life and my struggles symbolically and literally.
